Elder Emotional Abuse is defined as speaking to or treating an elderly person in a way that causes emotional pain and distress. Emotional elder abuse includes: intimidation through yelling or threats; humiliation and ridicule; habitual blaming and scapegoating.

Signs of elder emotional abuse include:

  • Threatening, belittling, or controlling caregiver behavior that you witness
  • Behavior from the elder that mimics dementia, such as rocking, sucking, or mumbling to oneself
