A U.S. Census Bureau report indicated that in 2010, 11 million elders lived alone. While living alone does not independently define an elder as a victim of Elder Isolation, it is a well-established factor that contributes to this form of elder abuse.

Elder Isolation is linked to a variety of complications including depression, high blood pressure, vulnerability, cognitive decline, dementia, unhealthy behavior, and long-term illness. Likewise, each of these complications includes another list of problems associated with them. For example, depression can lead to an increase in stress, poor eating and sleeping habits, cardiovascular issues, loss of physical stamina, decrease in muscle mass, and loss of bone density.
